This collection began many years ago as a high school class project. It has been added to over the ensuing years in bits and pieces and in spurts and pauses.

A great deal of the information and much of the inspiration for collecting more, came from cousin Joe who I first contacted in 1975 and with whom I carried on a long and fruitful correspondence.

One other person has been invaluable in putting together this collection. Although not a "Strever" we are connected by many common ancestors and perhaps most of all our common facination with history and those who peopled it. Margery has tramped the Columbia and Duchess County N. Y. fields and farmsteads of those early Strevers, the graveyards, courthouses and libraries in search of information that I needed.

___________ Striebel, the 1st American Generation of the family. Nothing is known of him except his existence. He had a son Johannes 1st who "Came as a lad" in about 1708-10

If Johannes, indeed, came as a lad we are assuming that he arrived with his parent which would be #1 ? Striebel.

There are unaccountable female Strever's (Striebel's?) in this early period, supporting the theory of a family arriving.

I can find only one recorded entry for Palatine arrivals that might fit in. At any rate the dates do fit.

Johannes Striebel of Germany, B. early 1700's Married ___________ (perhaps Eva _____________ ).

He settled in the Pine Plains area of Duchess Co., N.Y. about the year 1710.

According to Governor Hunter's records: Johannes was listed as having sailed from England in 1708, and Isaac Hunting's history "Nine Little Partners" says "Johannes Streibel from the Pallatinate, Germany, came to America in 1708, and was apprenticed to pay his passage to a Mr. Couse of Milan, (another source says Mr. Morehouse) Duchess Co. He was the founder of the Streibel, Strevel, and now Strever family in America."

Johannes was said to have at least two sons, only Johannes Jr. are we sure of, but I have included five children in the family for lack of any place to put them.

1 Johannes Striebel B. Jan 24, 1732 or Dec. 24, 1731 in Germany? * D. Feb 10(24) 1804 Married Maria Dings in 1756, daughter of Adam Dings ** and Anna Eva Schu (B. Sept. 10, 1741 D. Feb 10, 1808). Parents of seven children.

Their 1756 homestead was located near the Ameram Lead Mines. The original main section of the building is said to date from 1731. The old colonial entrance has been replaced, additions made, and exterior, interior remodeling done, but underneath is a frame of huge timbers.

Nearby is a cemetery with about 100 Strevers buried there. The wall surrounding the 1/2 acre plot was built by Johannes 1 in 1760.

2 (Possible) Uldrich Striebel B. ___ D. ___ Married Margaretha (Coon.*) Parents of at least 5 children. They disappear from the Ancram and N.Y. area about 1790's. This branch of the family came down using the name of Strevel. There is an Uldrich Striebel farm in the Ancram area now owned by the McArthur's (1980). Uldrich is listed in the 10th regiment Albany Co. Militia, Revolutionary War.

(History of Pine Plains lists marriage 1759 of Jacob Lauchs ( Laux? ) to Ann ( Annatje? ) Strever, daughter of Jacob Striebel of Wirtemberg???.)

We should look for a possible "Jacob" as father of Johannes and Uldrick - they both had sons named "Jacob".
 
 
 
 
 
 

Johannes and Uldrich had adjoining farms near rhe Ancram Lead Mines circa 1780’s. Uldrich was imprisoned as a Tory for a short while during the Revolutionary War. There is a record of the amount of peas (?) and bread that he consumed while incarcerated.

The Johan Adam Homestead is at Ancramdale N.Y.

13 Jacob (I) Striebel B. 1762 D. Feb. 16, 1850 Buried Streever cemetary Bap. June 18, 1762. Married Mary Husrant (Hoysrodt) (B. May 21, 1762 D. Feb. 16, 1850 ) (she could actually be Anna Maria Hoysrodt). Parents of twelve children. He was one of the 3 original assessors of Gallantine 1803 and is listed in New York in the Revolutionary War., Albany Co. Militia 10th Regiment.

14 Anna Maria Striebel B. Apr. 8, 1764 D. May 31, 1836 Bap. May 12, 1764 at Mt. Ross Church. Married Mathias Hoffman. Four known children.

15 Eva Striebel B. Mar. 27, 1766 D. ___ Bap. April 22, 1766 at Mt. Ross Ch. Married Hendrich Hoysrodt in 1785 (B. 1765 D. 1829) in 1785. Son of Adam and Eva Dennis. Parents of about 11 children. Hendrich A. Hoysrodt was one of the three original Commisoners of Gallantine in 1803. A Capt. in the Revolutionary Army. He started his homestead in about 1770 on a Livingston Grant. The farm passed to his son John 3, 1798 then to Henry and Lewis M. Hoysrodt. When Lewis died the farm went to a niece, Annie Barton Miller and her husband Harmon Miller, parents of Clifton, who took over the operation in 1947. His wife, Ethyl Strever was a descendent of Johannes III. The Hoysrodt family stem from a Mr.Hoysrodt who came to East Camp in 1710.

16 Johannes Striebel B. ___ D. June 29, 1832 Bap. July 4, 1768. Married Mary Hoysrodt (B. Mar. 3, 1770 D. May 30, 1820) in 1790, daughter of Hendrick and Anna Cramer. He was evidently a Capt. in the Revolutionary War. Parents of 10 children.

17 Benjamin Striebel B. November 1771 in the Striebel Homestead at Ancram D. Aug 23, 1822 Married in 1794 to Mareah (Mary) Righter. B. Nov. 4,1773 D. ___ Hudson N. Y. Parents of 3 children. He inherited the Striebel homestead. Was a farmer, contractor, lumberman, and soldier in the war of 1812. "He inherited a dominant nature but had great worth of character and was esteemed in church and community."

June 24, 1854), daughter of Adam Dings II and Eva (Kilmer). Parents of eleven children. He served in war of 1812. Lived at Ancram. In 1835 moved to Chatham. Of their 11 children "two were blind, two had very poor eyesight." These 4 and 1 more "died before their time." He had his name changed from Strevel to Strever about 1817. M. 2nd circa 1860 Annis Reynolds.

172 William Strever B. March 8, 1798 in Ancram D. April 20, 1859 in Clay N.Y. Married Sarah Rockerfeller (B. Feb. 22, 1802 in Ancram D. Feb. 22, 1823 (exactly 21 years old)). Parents of 3 children. He inherited his fathers farm at Ancram. On July 3, 1825, William married Elizabeth Niven (B. Oct. 9, 1808 D. Oct. 4, 1846 (32y 10m 26d check B. date), buried at Bishops farm Cemetery), daughter of John Niven, whose ancestors founded Nivenville, N.Y. They settled in Stuyvestant township in 1826 and in 1849 moved to Clay, N.Y. for the remainder of their lives. He was a farmer, sportsman, and a breeder of fine horses. He was rated very successful. William and Elizabeth had 5 more children.

She had a son (unknown) who is buried in the Strever plot at Greenwood Cemetery.

She was the daughter of James Butts and Lydia (Kinny), a 1st cousin to Datis thru their mothers. After Datis died she married Truman Dixon of Belcher, Washington Co. N.Y. (He was a father-in-law to one of Susans nieces.) They had no children of their own, but raised Lydia Porter, daughter of her sister Lucy (Butts) Porter.

He came down from Rotham about 1845 to settle at Clay near his Uncle William. Records show he purchased seven parcels of land in the Pine Plains section of Clay. He became a successful farmer, surveying most of Onondago Co. and part of Oswego Co. His farming was of the diversified Colonial type. In the autumn he gave each of his children residing in the area a quarter beef and wool to supply the families needs for the year. Parents of six children.

They settled on a farm near Guilderland, 5 mile west of Scenectedy. Later moved to a farm near Medusa N.Y. They were Methodists. Benjamine wore a well kept beard and was of distinguished appearance. Parents of three daughters.

171.5 Lafayette Strever B. Oct. 9, 1824 in Ancran D. Oct. 26, 1856 in Chatham Married Sept. 9, 1845 to Mary N. Tyson, daughter of Joseph and Sarah of Ghent N.Y. (B. Aug. 5, 1828 D. Jan 10, 1913). Round Lake Minn. Lafoyette learned the building trade from his father. At the time of his death he operated an inn on the old Boston-Albany turnpike near Chatham Center. Early in their marriage they must have lived at Round Lake, Minn. as their 1st two children were born there, details unknown. Parents of six children. Lafayette died "Mysteriously" at age 32 (according to his grandson). Mary Tyson Strever remarried Alonzo Burton and moved to Round Lake Minn. in 1858 possibly had 2nd family.

171.6 Hiram Strever B. Oct. 2, 1826 in Ancran, D. June 9, 1856 in Chatham (30 yrs.) Married in 1850 to Margaret Cooper (B. Oct. 23, 1823 D. Jan 18, 1903). (She married 2nd time to Jesse Horton Starr.) Parents of 2 children. He had poor eyesight and was nearly blind before maturity.

171.7 Adam Strever B. July 4, 1828 D. Jan. 5, 1893 in Pendelton, Oregon Married Maggie Whitney in 1858. Parents of 2 sons. (Edith Strever Benedict said that Adam was the handsomest Strever she had ever seen.) He was a graduate of Albany Teachers College. He taught in the Albany Public Schools. He was principal of Albany High, Instructor at Albany Teachers College, and was later an accountant at Albany State Capitol. He was a free mason and possessed some ability as an orator. He wore a full beard and was fond of hunting and fishing. As a result of a fishing accident and gangrene, his leg was amputated at the hip. After recovery he resumed his sports (baseball, wrestling, etc.)

"Rev. Alex Reynolds Moved to Austin, Mower Co., in 1873. Born in Hebron, Washington Co. N. Y. Nov. 13,1833. At age 23 Fort Edward Collegiate Institute. After 2nd year went to Concord Biblical Institute (N. H.). Graduated 1861 and joined Vermont Conference at Barre. Was First stationed at St. Albans Bay. Afterward he preached at various places in N. Y. and Vermont.

He abandoned the Ministry because of failing health and became a Life Insurance Agent for 2 years at Balston Pa. He then resumed his calling, continuing in the east until 1873. In 1875 he joined the Minnesota Conference and was stationed at Spring Valley and later Byron in Almstead Co. and at Blomming Prarie and city of Austin. Retired to his farm in 1882 which contains 240 acres, 150 improved. M. 1861 to Amanda M. Strever." 6 children.

Also 3 terms as County Superintendent of Schools. After 7 years he returned to N.Y. where he married 1st cousin Mary B. Strever. They returned to Iowa where two children were born to them. In 1907 when the government granted new land in South Dakota, they registered at O'Niel, Nebraska for a number. Daughter Edith received a number and received a 1/4 section in the N.W. part of Tripp Co. 2 years later another tract opened and this time Henry drew a number at Dewey Co. He rented his Iowa farm and began proving his North Dakota homestead. Son Ward squatted on land nearby. They returned to Iowa in 1923 and sold out and moved to Lynwood, California. In 1929 Henry moved to Hot Spring, California. Henry collected much family genealogical material.

Their wedding was the social event of the season at her grandfathers Chatham Farmhouse. They settled on a farm in the Lebanon Valley. Merritt was a farmer and musician of note, playing at neighborhood gatherings and at Columbia Hall, a renouned Hostelry of the Stage Coach Era. He died at an early age, leaving Etta to raise the young children. This done she made an extended trip to the midwest (Minn.) to visit her mother. When she returned to N.Y. she married Mariman Turner, a Hoogs Corner farmer. Mother of seven Cummings children.

He returned to N.Y. about 1885 and married Lucy A. Starr (daughter of Jessie and Cynthia (Campbell) Starr). They homesteaded a wheat farm in Minn. Some years later they returned to N.Y. and lived at Schoharie, Albany, Montgomery, Saratoga, and Schenectedy Co's. Engaging in farming and carpentry, he was a beekeeper, Methodist. Lucy Starr Strever lived until May 1937 (80y) with her daughter.

He received his education in Albany Public Schools, majoring in music and art. He performed on the stage for awhile with a banjo routine. He designed and made elaborate picture frames, period furniture, and gold-leaf productions. He left Cora, who with her young son returned to her parent's home, and went to Washington State. In Washington he divorced Cora by proxy and married Florence Neil, B. Feb. 13, 1875 D. Oct. 22, 1945 daughter of Henry and Susan (Coffman) Neil. They had 3 children and Florence divorced Willard. He returned to N.Y. where he married 3rd to Lydia Coon, younger sister of Cora. He was evidently a commercial artist as Joseph Strever met him one day while he was painting a poster for Pierce-Arrow Motor Co. Father of five children by his three wives.

He came with his parents sometime after 1884 to probably Kamrar, Iowa from Argyle, N.Y. He grew up on various farms in Iowa and as a young man answered a call from Herman Bushbon and went down to Hinckly, IL to work on his farm. (This homestead was bought by H. Bushbon from Ensign's grandfather John A's widow. It was where his father George had grown up.) In due time Ensign married Harriet Agusta Bushbon (B. Jan 4, 1883 D. Oct. 24, 1962), daughter of Herman Bushbon and Agusta (Pinkernill). Ensign also ran Allie Bushbon's farm (a spinster sister of Harriet's who managed the house and children until she became mentally ill.) Ensign was primarily a stockman and at the time of his death had built up his herds with blooded stock. He died in an Auto-train accident when they were returning from seeing their 1st grandchild.
